Nisekoi

Almost every element of Nisekoi is very cliché. From the beginning being about some promise made by childhood friends, to the way a new "love" comes into contact with the male character by bumping into him. However, even with something that is cliché, other circumstances or characters caught in the story can be a simply way to distinguish itself from other anime that just stick with the straight and narrow. Really Nisekoi has shown a pretty good start to something that explicitly started very much stereotypical.

So what is it that set itself apart from all these other love stories? To start, even with an introduction of Chitoge being common, the relationship that got established was one that started as moderate hatred, progressed in a certain way that will most likely lead into more than just friends -- especially with this fake lover thing that is happening for the next three years. So it felt like there is going to be complex relationships of character, but the characters themselves are rather simple. I can very much let character simplicity slide as long as one aspect involving them is somewhat complex.

So welcome back to a place where the appeal of the harem romances are slowly subsiding and we are making our way to more believe circumstances of one to three girls rather than four plus. I'm enjoying what this quirky little romcom has to offer so far, and hope to see a bit more drama coming in the foreseeable future.
